Surface water or saturated soil?
Water running across a driveway is different from a lawn that stays soggy between storms. Channel drains and catch basins collect surface runoff; French drains can help intercept subsurface water when designed for that purpose. Choosing the right collection method starts with watching where water comes from and where it settles.
Gravity drainage when the site allows it
A gravity system needs suitable elevation from inlet to outlet, even if the lawn looks relatively flat. Pipe slope, capacity and access for cleaning matter. Downspout connections, retaining-wall drainage and catch basins should be considered together rather than treated as isolated fixes.
Pumped drainage when gravity is not enough
Low courtyards, walkout entrances and some driveways cannot drain by gravity alone. A pump-and-basin system may be appropriate. Discuss debris handling, power requirements, backup options and maintenance access. A discharge route must be evaluated before equipment is selected.
Grading and runoff planning
Regrading or a swale can help direct surface water away from a building. The scope should account for existing landscaping, neighboring properties and the final outlet.
